Martha’s VELUX Skylight Install IMPROVED Interior Lighting

Velux Install Steps Illustrated

Martha’s Velux Skylight Install

This was a new Velux skylight install on an architectural shingle roof (#1). To see the process, just start with the pic from the top left corner and move to the right. Then drop down to the next row and start with pic #4 (skylight is installed).

Why a Velux Skylight?

Our customer chose this Velux skylight to be installed over the dining room to add more natural light to the interior. Velux@ is known for its great variety and selection of Skylights, Sun Tunnel® Skylights, Roof Windows, Commercial Skylights, Modular Skylights, and Skylight Shades. Velux@ is also known for its quality and durability. Our customer wanted a long-lasting skylight, so she chose VELUX. We forgot to take the pics to show the dining room both before and after the Skylight was installed. Those couple of pics would have shown how much her home’s interior lighting had improved.

Martha’s VELUX® Skylight dimensions were roughly 4′ by 2′. VELUX has both standard and custom sizes for skylights.

Velux Skylight Install – First We Removed the Architectural Asphalt Shingles

As you can see from the pics, we had to first remove the architectural asphalt shingles in the area where the skylight was to be installed. Pic #2. We were especially careful not to damage any of the shingles we had to remove nor to damage the surrounding shingles. Why? Because these shingles would go back on after the skylight was installed.

Roof Decking – We Removed it to Open Up the Roof to Install the Skylight

Next, we cut the decking to create the opening in the roof for the skylight (#2). Then we installed the VELUX skylight (#3) and the flashing (forgot to take a pic of the sealant tape we applied) to prevent leaks.

Applied Sealant Tape, Reinstalled Architectural Shingles Around the Velux Skylight

Next, we installed sealant tape for a barrier to prevent moisture from coming in around the skylight. We reinstalled the architectural shingles and then sealed them completely around the skylight (#4, #5). When we reinstalled the architectural shingles around the skylight we were especially careful to not damage any shingles. As it turned out the VELUX skylight looks as if it was part of the original home design. Nice. At least our customer thinks so, and we do too!

Moved Duct Work in the Attic Area to Make Room for the Skylight Tunnel

We then moved into the attic area to relocate the AC duct which was in the way of the installation.

Finished Skylight Tunnel – Framed the Tunnel, Hung & Finished the Drywall, Painted the Interior with the Customer’s Color Choice

We laid out the hole, cut the drywall, framed the hole, and hung and finished the sheetrock. We trimmed out the skylight tunnel and then caulked and finish painted with the customer’s choice of color. The yellow was to add a little extra brightness to the room (#6).

This job turned out very well and our customer was very pleased.

How Long Do Velux Skylights Last?

Velux makes a quality skylight product. Their literature and specs state that with normal wear and tear the skylight will last from 20 to 30 years. But, they also state that one of the biggest issues, as far as the lifespan of the skylight is concerned, is when the home gets a roof replacement and the existing skylight is jostled in the reroof process. That kind of movement will inevitably lead to leaks over time.

When is the Best Time to Replace a Skylight?

As a recommendation, if you have an existing skylight and you are also getting a roof replacement, that is the time to consider replacing your skylight. And, newer models of skylights have newer construction designs and often more modern and better construction materials (longer-lasting, durability, etc.) improve the skylight’s function. . . more and better lighting in the home’s interior.
